The New Item menu in File Explorer in the recent Windows 10 May 2019 Update allows you to create new files in the current folder, but you may not ever get to use some of the options. This is how you can remove entries you don’t want from the list.
To access the New Item menu, click the “New item” button option in any File Explorer folder.
You can also right-click an empty space in a folder then click the “New” option on the context menu that pops up.
Some programs will add new types of files to this menu automatically, and that make the menu cumbersome if you want to use it. To remove any entry, you have to go to Windows Registry to delete an entry.
Note: Registry Editor is an important tool and if you misuse it, your system may become unstable or even inoperable. Using the Registry Editor should not prove difficult if you follow the instructions. If you don’t know how to use it, read about how to use the Registry Editor before you begin and make sure to back up the Registry and of course your PC before making any alterations.
To open the Registry Editor, search for “regedit” in the Windows search bar and press enter to open it. After that permit it to make changes to your PC.
In the left sidebar of the Registry Editor, there’s a top-level key named HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT.
Every file type is stored there. For this tutorial, we will be removing the “Contact” file type from the New Item menu. Click the arrow next to the HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT key to expand it, then scroll down to find the file extension you want to remove.
Expand the key, and you’ll see a subkey titled “ShellNew”.
Right-click the key and then click “Delete” on the context menu.
A confirmation message will appear, click yes if you are sure you want that file type removed from the New Item menu.
With that you have successfully removed the file type, which is the Contact file type as used in this tutorial from the New Item menu.
